Copper plate engraving.
Four sheets joined to form two. Image 14 3/4 x 19 3/4" (37.4 x 50.4 cm) plus margins
Ortelius’s beautiful map of Africa. First issued in 1570, this map was a cornerstone map for the continent. Ortelius based it on contemporary maps by Gastaldi, Mercator, and Forlani and others. Ortelius is best known for producing the atlas from which this map comes from, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or "Atlas of the Whole World". The atlas was immensely popular and was produced for over forty years. Richly embellished with a handsome cartouche, a sea battle and several sea monsters. From a circa 1598 French text edition. Plate cracking evident in title cartouche.
Van den Broecke, "Ortelius Atlas Maps" #8; Norwich "Maps of Africa" #10.
Good condition save for some minor splitting in lower centerfold. Original hand coloring.
