Alena Vavilina (b. 1989) is an ultracontemporary modern artist from Moscow, Russia.
Vavilina’s art is cross-dimensional, which is attributed to her internationality. She had a brief academic formation, including France, England, Malta, China and the UAE. She displays her art in multiple galleries and art fairs worldwide, particularly in Asia. In her paintings, we see a borderless world, unconstrained by geography and time. Her oeuvre is created through independent experimentation with assorted styles, and mixed media.
“Art can be beautiful and also have a statement”, Vavilina says. For Alena, both the Butterfly Series, and the highlight piece “Against the Stream” from its respective eponymous series, emphasises that statement. These pieces share a theme, but moreover, a technique. “Applying gold leaf and silver leaf along with ink on paper does not allow you to make any mistake. It is a very time-consuming process that forces not only the creator, but also the observer to focus and slow down”, Vavilina says.
In her cross-dimensional world, observing nature and beauty is a radical act. “There is no need to follow blindly. You need to switch logic, see what is going on for yourself. To go against the stream is to go against violence and war. It is to take an alternative path of presence and enjoyment.”
Alena's art combines the technique of the ancient Asian style of Japanism, in which the artist's hand must be so professional that there is no right to error. This style has long inspired European contemporary art, including the Impressionists. Van Gogh himself, whom Alena admires, reproduced Japanese work by Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen and worked with the distinctively Asian emphasis on nature as a subject, creating Almond Blossom (1890) to great posthumous acclaim.
When admiring Alena’s series of her Butterflies series, Damien Hirst inevitably comes to mind. For Hirst, butterflies symbolize death and resurrection. For Alena, they are a moral ideal illustrated in her oeuvre, with an extensive and rich reference to museum quality artworks. Provenance: Directly From the Artist, Certificate will be printed and stamped with wax AV stamp and sent along with the painting.
