In the late 1950s he moved to Canada later becoming very involved with social issues in the North. He dedicated his art practice to rising awareness to the issues he was passionate about. After a decade of work in this area, Kirkby became the President of the Nile Creek Enhancement Society in 2006. The Society is actively engaged in projects that are bringing habitats back to life and reviving the kelp and eelgrass beds that are fundamentally important to the salmon’s ocean habitat.
