This is an original fully painted Buffalo Hide Robe from Sioux artist “Paha Ska” Orville Francis Salway Sr. The buffalo hide shows rich winter fur with an Indian tanned buffalo hide thick surface having beautiful polychrome (multi-colored) surface showing a traditional Sioux Buffalo Hunt in unbelievable detail at the center and is surrounded by classic Sioux Ledger painted drawings around the outer border, as while as being signed, “Paha Ska” in the right corner. Orville Francis “Paha Ska” Salway Sr. (1923-2005) was born at White Clay, Sheridan County, Nebraska, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in a soddy, fifth of eight children to William and Winifred Salway. Growing up on Pine Ridge he rode horses with his father, hunting and trapping and was fluent in Lakota. He painted under the name “Paha Ska” (White Hills) after the buttes around the family homestead south of Allen, a name given by Ben Black Elk. His painted Buffalo / Bison hides are renowned amongst collectors for their fine detail and unique Buffalo Hunt scenes. The hide is in very good condition and has some nice vintage age, this is one of the finest examples by Paha Ska that has been brought to the public market. Measures overall
