Featured in this lot is this rare Navajo Gallegos / Gallegos Yei Bei Chei rug circa 1900. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a single Yei figural that is unique in nature being a single Yei and is considered a Gallegos Yei Bei Chei that shows a dark skinned individual with his arms raised and holding dancing wands adorned with feathers. Other symbols present includes, uniquely, snakes on either side which is very rare to be seen present. The rug features Lazy Lines throughout the piece and with heathered light brown field that shows the decoration of dark brown, and red coloration and shows hints of beige. This rug specifically was published in Navajo Weavings with Ceremonial Themes : A Historical Overview of a Secular Art Form by Vallett. The Yei Navajo rugs begin in the Northwest corner of the reservation, in the early part of the 20 century Developed by Will Evans Trader and owner of the Shiprock trading Company. Yei are religious deities taken from the Navajo Sand paintings. But these weavings do not have any religious significance. In these weavings the male Yei have round heads & the female Yei have square heads. Usually the these weaving have a stylized rainbow down the sides and across the bottom and no border. The condition of this rug is well preserved with some fraying areas to the rim of the rug but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this rug is 50 1/2" x 35 1/2". The thread count of this rug is 60 threads per square inch.
