This is an original, authentic set of early Jesus M. Tapia (1856-1931) spurs with double silver mountings, engravings and filigree work. Jesus M. Tapia (1865-1931) is considered the Holy Grail of California spur makers with this set showing the distinctive design elements for authentic sets including classic engravings, intricate filigreed cut-out floral inlays with stylized rooster-head and fish design, all documented as being almost exclusively from Jesus M. Tapia.
Jesus M. Tapia (1856 - 1931) spurs and bits are the most coveted and valued of the early California makers and was renowned for the elegance and grace of his pieces which frequently included very stylized iron work, tendrils and the elegant and artistry of filigree. Tapia’s work was seldom marked but his style and quality were so distinctive that a knowledgeable California spur and bit collector will have little trouble identifying the few pieces that come to the market. Tapia spurs are truly the most collected California maker with examples selling over $100,000 at auction. One of very few known Tapia’s with the filigree the raised nipple concho on the spur and raised nipple concho on the spur strap.
This is truly a stunning set showing double silver mounting (silver inlay and overlay on both sides), filigree cutouts along the entire spur include both side and both sides of the shank, the raised nipple concho at the rowel spot, the stylized fish design and rooster designs with filigree floral designs. The set also shows two beautiful silver engraved 2-inch diameter heel band concho / conchas on the old leather spur straps with basket weave tooling. The set has 4 1/8-inch diameter eight / 8-point large rowels, total length with heel band is 12-inches and 6.5-inches wide with leather. Spur frame without strap spots is 3.25-inches wide.
