High Grade percussion half-stock sporting rifle made by famed Troy, New York gunsmith Nelson Lewis. Nelson Lewis was known for making some of the most accurate and high quality percussion sporting and target rifles of the 1850s-1870s. He is included throughout the classic work by Ned Roberts The Muzzle loading caplock rifle first published in 1940, with a great deal of text and photos dedicated to him, his rifles and shooting recommendations (copies of much of this in included). This Nelson Lewis sporting rifle features double set triggers, German silver mountings with ornate trigger guard and cap box on the right side of the stock, and bird-in-flight inlay in the cheek piece on the left side. It is further fitted with an elevation adjustable “lollipop” tang sight with globe pinhead front sight along with small buckhorn rear barrel sight- all appear original and in the typical style used by Nelson Lewis as shown in photographs of his rifles. The stock is a dark reddish walnut and the 32” octagon barrel is approximately .36-.38 caliber with very fine rifled bore- the former owner of this fine rifle shot it using patched readily available .350” round balls. Many hunters also used patched conical bullets in N. Lewis rifles to great effect. Very fine overall condition with solid stock and fully functioning double set triggers etc. The barrel is browned with the top containing lightly worn N. Lewis, Troy, NY markings. Rifles made by Lewis are always in demand and fine examples of especially sporting models are very difficult to find as most sporters seem to have had long years of usage in the field. Most N. Lewis rifles that have been observed at present show alterations, repairs and frequently abuse. This example is one of the best. The rifle weighs 8lbs 4oz. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
