A rare and unusual Southern Plains pictorial concho belt circa 1890. Possibly from the Cheyenne or Comanche. Comprised of ten nickel silver hand engraved conchos affixed to original early commercial hide leather. Most comparable belts from this period had rocker engravings. The Thunderbirds (thunder birds) are a common emblem with Plains tribes. Upon close examination each thunderbird is unique with slight variations between each. Engraving of this quality from this period from the Plains makes this belt truly a rare and desirable collectible. Overall length of 38 inches by 2 3/8 inches wide. Each concho is approximately 2 7/8 inches by 2 1/8 inches. Total weight of 381.7 grams.
