The lot features an original circa 1875- cast pewter fully rocker engraved pipe tomahawk in classic Western Plains pattern. The piece exhibits a large cast pewter head showing a wide western head with small rear facing spur and oblong tear drop / oval eye / eyelet hole with a gasket remnant inside. The top of the head shows a forged molded chevron with punch dot engraving having a tall large vase shaped pipe bowl with double ridge. The bowl has been drilled and widened by hand over time. The entire blade on both sides of the head are covered in rocker engraving in a geometric pattern. Fully pewter heads are immensely rare, as they are softer and rarely survive. The piece is on a solid wood, possibly hardwood haft of a later, but early age showing a hot file burned pattern with solid brass trade tack tops having metal round shanks having a dark patina. The gripping area is incised, cut in and the end shows a rectangular tapered smoking top with small spur end on the handle and pierced primitive hole which would have held a drop of some kind. Just above the gripping area is another pierced hole, which would have held a wrist throng, drop of beadwork or drop of feathers. Both drops are long missing. Provenance: Found to be an authentic circa 1875-1890 Western tomahawk by the experts at Morphys / James D. Julia. Nice original early Indian Wars era tomahawk head in rare pewter and presentation grade engraved state. Overall measures 18.75”L, the head is 9”L by 2 7/8”L across the bottom of the blade.
