Featured in this lot is an Original Apsáalooke Crow Bull Ear Photograph Cabinet Card, circa 1900-1920, by Zalmon Gilbert, Mandan, North Dakota. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Moving to Dakota Territory in 1881, Zalmon Gilbert (1841-1897) established the Gilbert and Miller (his wife Alice Miller) photography studio in Mandan, North Dakota. Gilbert, continued the family business by opening his own photography studio in New Salem, North Dakota. The portrait shows Bull Ear wearing a shirt, leggings, and a neckerchief. A blanket is tied around his waist and covers his legs, while another blanket covers his shoulders. Hanging from his waist is a rope or cord decorated with fur or hair. A single feather is in his hair and he cradles a war club (with stone head and feathers) in his arm. The cabinet card has the "Gilbert" studio name on the bottom right corner, the studio hallmark in the middle, and "Mandan, N.D." on the bottom right corner. The cabinet card is in very well preserved condition, slight scuffing noted along edges, age tanning. Measures 4.25"W x 6.5"L.
