- Lot Description
The lot features a 19th-century Sioux gunstock war club from the ex-C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt collections. The lot features a hardwood carved gunstock war club with red painted designs and forged sheet iron spontoon knife blade held into place with a pin of hardwood. The club exhibits a classic Sioux pattern of gunstock club with sweeping top tapering to a rounded gripping area along with a tear drop end with small foot having a pierced hole which would have held a drop. The club has a nice deep color with shiny surface and several bands of red mineral pigment ocher painted designs throughout. The blade has a nice forged tapered edge. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Catherine A. O'Dell. An attached museum tag reads, "1396-87 O'Dell". Measures 29.5-incehs long by 10.5-inches wide, the blade protrudes from the haft or stock 5.5-inches long and 1.25-inches at its widest. It was on display at the C.M. Russell museum. A copy of the C.M. Russell Museum paperwork can be available at request.
