New York born photographer Stephanie Pfriender Stylander, inspired by the photographers she observed at rock and roll concerts, officially began pursuing photography with an apprenticeship under the celebrated photographer Art Kane. She began in the fashion industry, producing work for editorial clients such as Glamour, Elle, GQ, Interview, and Harper's Bazaar in the 1990s. In 1992, during one of her most prominent shoots, Pfriender Stylander likened Kate Moss, who was then almost completely unknown, to Anna Karina of Jean-Luc Goddard's films. Pfriender Stylander's editorial work of the 1990s and 2000s celebrated a sensuality and grittiness inspired by the French New Wave cinema and aimed to reveal character and psychological truth, which led to portrait assignments of prominent actors and musicians. While European publications appreciated this cinematic noir style, the demand for more highly merchandised and slick images in the late 2000s encouraged her to step back from editorial work and pursue other directions in photography. In 2018, the publication of her first book, The Untamed Eye (MW Editions), re-introduced her fashion and portrait work.
Pfriender Stylander's photographs have been included in AIPAD, Paris Photo, Photo Basel, Photo London, Photo Shanghai, Barcelona's Festival International de la Photo de Mode, and are housed in the Nicola Erni Collection and other private collections worldwide. Her work has received numerous awards from American Photography, Communication Arts, International Photography Awards, and The Lucie Foundation. She is represented by the Staley-Wise Gallery in New York, where her work is currently featured in the 2020 exhibition, 2 Women of Style: Louis Dahl-Wolfe and Stephanie Pfiender Stylander, as well as by Ira Stehmann Fine Art in Munich and Galerie Sophie Scheidecker in Paris. Pfriender Stylander lives in downtown New York City and continues her portraits and nude works.
