China Trade Silver, Canton, ca. early 19th century. Includes a rectangular snuff box with canted corners, mounted all over with panels of mother-of-pearl secured by reeded rims to the flanged, hinged lid; the panels carved in low relief, on the lid with a figure on a terrace, with trees and pavilions surrounding a shield-shaped reserve; the sides with floral carvings within beaded rectangular reserves. A nearly identical snuff box is in Alan J. Marlow, Chinese Export Silver, London, 1990, p. 79, no. 88. Together with a rectangular silver and shell snuff box, mounted all over with panels of mother-of-pearl secured by reeded rims to the flanged, hinged lid; on the lid with flowers surrounding a central rectangular reserve, with surrounding geometric borders; the sides with floral and vine carving. Together with a silver and shell toothpick case, rectangular shape with canted corners, mounted all over with mother-of-pearl panels secured by reeded rims to the flanged, hinged lid; with a thumb piece; the mother of pearl panels carved with low relief flowers, the lid with a central reserve containing the engraved script monogram JSG; the bottom engraved with the signature J. Gould; the interior with fabric liner. A toothpick case of closely related form is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, illustrated in Christina H. Nelson, Directly From China - Export Goods for the American Market, 1784-1930, 1985, p. 55; and another in Jean Gordon Lee, Philadelphians and the China Trade, 1784-1844, 1984, p. 203.

All shipping is outsourced. All buyers and shippers must come prepared with appropriate packing materials and help for heavy items. Our staff will not be available to help move heavy items. If payment is made by check, items will be held 7 business days before an item is released for shipping.
Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.
Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
