Set of ten skittle or 'jeu de quilles' pieces. Depicting sailors wearing the standard French Navy uniform introduced in 1858. Each wears a beret and marinière and holds either a gun or boarding axe at his side. Painted paper mache and carved wood. French, circa 1900.
H 10-3/4".
While the origins are uncertain, variations of "skittles" have been referenced in manuscripts dating back to the 14th century and depicted by artists dating back to the 15th century. The unifying goal is to knock over nine to ten pins using a wooden, leather, or rubber ball. Popularized in Europe as a pastime in lawns, public houses, and clubs, the game became a shared form of entertainment for all classes.
The game is featured in works by artists such as Master FVB (ca. 1475–1500), Jacques Stella (French, 1596–1657), Frans de Momper (Flemish, 1603–1660), Dirck van Delen (Dutch, 1605–1671), Andrew Lawrence (British, 1706–1747), and Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (French, 1707–1783).
Provenance: Kendra and Allan Daniel.
Condition: Surface wear and imperfections as expected.
