23 piece Russian sterling silver vanity set by silversmith Johann Bernhard Hertz. The external travel chest is hardwood veneered in ebony with brass hardware and a brass plate on the lid engraved with a marquis crown and the initials "E.C.". The box is lined with purple velvet and has a label inside the top lid that reads " Nicholls & Plincke St. Petersburg" around "Magansin Anglais." The travel case contents include a silver tray with a purple velvet divider set inside, a silver water pitcher, two silver candlesticks, five rectangular cut glass containers with silver lids, two round cut glass containers with silver lids, two cut glass perfume bottles with silver lids, two cut glass powder containers with silver lids and a silver cup. All of the containers lids in silver all feature decorative engravings with a maquis crown and the monogram "E.C." at the center, all are gold plated in the inside surface and bear the makers mark of Johann Bernard Hertz. The silver cup does not have any gold plating and the makers mark is different, however the monogram and crown match the rest of the set. The purple velvet lined divider features three hidden compartments, one for each candlestick cup and one with a smaller silver case three tiered internal dividers. Inside this smaller case with three tier dividers is a pencil, thimble and threader all in 14kt gold. A powder stamper, awl, nail file and pocket knife with mother of pearl handles, as well as six other miscellaneous vanity items in mother of pearl. Also, included a corkscrew and two pairs of sewing scissors.
Dated 1884, St. Petersburg Russian.
Silver components 126+ ozt. (unable to detach all silver from glass for complete total) total.
Gold items: 13.4 dwt total.
External case measures: L 17-1/4" W 11" H 7"
Condition: Silver items have very minor wear and surface abrasions from use, one rectangular container has some minor chipping under lid. Box has crack in ebony veneer on top. Missing a few of the smaller vanity items. Base lining of box slightly decaying.

Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Please note that all first-time buyers that wish to pick items up in person must pay with cash.

All purchases must be picked up from our location within 14 days, no exceptions. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.
Items not picked up within 60 days of the auction date will be considered in default and become the property of New England Auctions.
