China Trade, Hong Kong, ca. 1879. Large China Trade painting of the American Barque Miriam off Hong Kong. Oil on canvas in gilt carved frame.
H 25 in. W 34-1/4 in.
Provenance: The barque Miriam was launched from Camden, Maine on March 20, 1877. She was named after the daughter of one of the owners, T.B. Witherspoon of Boston, Massachusetts. The ship arrived in Hong Kong on November 12, 1879, under the command of Captain A.H. Parker. This painting was mentioned in a feature article in the Worcester Sunday Telegram, of October 6, 1929, profiling the life of Miriam Witherspoon, after her long career in public service. It stated that above her china cabinet hung this painting of the bark Miriam, named for her by her father and painted in China by a Chinese artist. The ship was lost off the coast of Florida in 1880.
Condition: Applied to masonite. Inspected under UV light. No restoration noted.
