Major General Claude Martin (1735-1800)- Rare presentation silver over copper medal, Bengal Presidency, 1796-97. Possibly deigned by Francesco Rinaldi (1755-1798 or later). A Uniformed bust portrait of Martin with the words: LABORE ET - CONSTANTIA and signed "A McKenzie" below; and Urdu script on the obverse which translates: "Most excellent in government, Sword of the Realm, Supreme amongst Knights, General Claude Martin the Brave, Courageous in War", 1796-1797, framed.
Diameter 1-1/2 in.
Provenance: The late Marvin Sadik (former Director of the National Portrait Gallery). From a humble background in Lyon, France, Claude Martin became a significant figure in the British East India Company, where he was praised for his military prowess, and rose to Major General. His extraordinary legacy includes writings, architecture, artworks, and educational institutions including Le Martiniere Boys School in Lucknow today, located at his country palace Constantia. Among his Indian enterprises, he exported indigo to Europe, created a cannon foundry, minted coins, brought a Dutch diamond-cutting method to India, and introduced hot-air balloons to Lucknow by 1785. At his death, Martin left a library of four thousand books, and over six hundred-fifty Company School paintings of birds.
Condition: Minor imperfections.
