Civil war diary of Wm. B. Johnson, 1861. 93 pages. Johnson was a soldier in Company E, 1st Regiment of the Massachusetts Foot Volunteers. The diary commences May 23rd, 1861 and ends at the end of the year. At the end are several pages of the Roll of Co. E for May, 1861 and again at January, 1862. There is also a list of the Companies of the 1st Regiment for the same dates. Johnson joined the Pulaski Guards, Co. E. 1st Regiment on May 23rd. On the 25, the Company was "sworn in to the U.S. service but Lieut. Amory". They eventually march to Washington, DC and they pass the White House "where Uncl [sic] Abe reviewed us." Johnson records many skirmishes, including the saving of a schooner that was hit by enemy artillary in the river (Patuxent?). He is directly involved with being in a boat that faces enemy fire, reaches the boat and outs out the fire, and eventually returns the boat to it's owner. In October, he puts his musket down as he is ordered to to take on the roll of Bugler. Much info about meeting with slaves, sleeping in tobacco barns with pig lice, rain storms, etc. The last page of the journal is entitled " Receipt for Diarhea[sic]"
H 7-1/2 in. W 6-3/8 in.
Condition: Minor imperfections. Book is a square 8vo, 1/2 black cloth with marbled paper covers. Front inner hinge is starting to separate from the binding, but strings are still holding. Considering the miles marched, and the many drenchings of rain, battles, etc., this book is in remarkable condition.
