- Lot Description
East Indies, Batavia (present day Jakarta), circa 1750, a rare pair of Dutch-Colonial carved and gilded red lacquer high-back side chairs. The molded uprights with a carved crest above a back splat decorated with rocaille motifs and a crown, above a caned seat frame, raised on acanthus carved front legs terminating in animal ball and claw feet.
H 45-3/8 in.
Provenance: A pair of Batavian gilded red lacquer corner arm chairs, from the same set, are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; acquired in 1947, and illustrated in Asian Splendour: Company Art in the Rijksmuseum, page 59-60, no. 37. The museum conjectures, that the carved panel in the back, with rocaille motif, was probably taken from pattern books circulating around 1750. The chair’s details, primarily its red and gold colors, were typically East Indies-Chinese. Closely related chairs can be seen in a 1935 photograph of antique Indo-Dutch furniture in the home of J. Habbema residence in Rembang (Central Java, Indonesia), illustrated in Domestic Interiors at the Cape and in Batavia, 1602-1795, page 44, fig. 32.
Condition: Surface imperfections as expected.

Items can be picked up in person or by a shipper at 14 Business Park Drive - Unit 5, Branford, CT - BY CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please contact the gallery 24 hours in advance to make an appointment. Pickup can be scheduled for Monday through Friday between 9am - 3pm beginning the Monday after the date of the auction. Purchased items that have been paid for but not picked up or shipped from our auction facility within 14 days of the auction will be stored at a rate of $10 per day per lot for furniture and larger items and $5 per day per lot for smaller items. A moving fee of $25 going into storage and $25 going out of storage will be added. Storage fees and late fees must be paid before items are released. There are no exceptions.
