Unsigned oil on wood board painting of Ship rock, New Mexico. American, ca. late 19th century. This is a classic landscape painting in the American Western tradition, similar to the works of artists like Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926), Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902), and Frederic Edwin Church (1826 - 1900). Shiprock looms over the landscape, with snow capped mountains in the background and desert brush in the foreground. The artist showed the surface of Shiprock with great naturalism, and the entire scene is evocative of the time and place. This painting is a symbol of America's expansion into the Western states, and the country's growing fascination with that region. Painting is in good condition, with minor wear and discoloration / patina of varnish. Examined outside of frame, mind areas of wear around edges. Board measures about 9 1/2" wide by 13" tall. As framed, measures 13 3/4" wide by 17 1/2" tall.
