Magnificent Antique Room Size Art Deco Chinese Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa date: 1920 – This gorgeous Art Deco Chinese rug from the 1920’s reflects the Shanghai style that was an important part of this movement. This magnificently artistic rug from China features the simple shapes and lack of ornamentation that defines the Art Deco rugs. Reverence for the natural world has always been a traditional part of Chinese art, and the simplicity of the pines and the brilliant sky is a reflection of these principles. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this rug is that it represents the Shanghai invasion of an art style that began in Paris.
The 1925 Paris Exhibition marked the official beginning of the Art Deco period in art and architecture. The exhibition defined a style that would soon sweep the world of art and design around the world. The movement was known for its bold colors, geometric elements, and decadent details.
When the Art Deco movement reached China and Japan, it began to take on a unique character that incorporated elements of Asian artwork. The scale and basic elements remained the same, but you would often see elements, such as pagoda-style roofs, Chinese cranes, and dragons incorporated into the designs. This style became known as Chinoiserie and represented a blending of the east and west.
The world loved this new Asian interpretation of Art Deco style, and Shanghai would go on to rival Paris as a center for the style. This beautiful piece is the perfect example of an Art Deco interpretation of Chinese landscape design that epitomizes the Shanghai Art Deco style. This rug has an earthy theme and colors, making it the perfect piece for bringing a touch of the natural world indoors.
