ANTIQUE MALAYER PERSIAN RUG. 6 ft 2 in x 4 ft (1.88 m x 1.22 m).
Antique Malayer Carpet, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rugs, Circa Date: 1920 – This rich, warm Malayer carpet is the perfect addition to create a cozy space for relaxing. Malayer carpets are created in smaller villages and are often smaller in size than those produced in the larger cities. This beautiful carpet uses earthy tones and classic designs to create a piece that will complement a range of décor schemes.
Malayer carpets are loved for their primitive, geometric designs that reflect the traditions of the local village weavers. They were at the height of their production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A majority of them were produced as part of a cottage industry, and many of them were produced in the homes of the weavers.
Each Malayer rug is distinctive, and the weaver often only has a repertoire of memorized designs at their disposal. They typically do not follow a pattern and create each carpet from memorized patterns, inserting a motif as they see fit along the way. This makes each piece a special creation of the weaver who has given it their own personal touch.
Malayer carpets are often thick and warm. The pile is often shorn close to emphasize the design and to give it clarity. Malayer lies between the two major carpet producing centers of Hamadan and Sarouk. Many times, you can see the distinctive influence of these two carpet weaving regions in Malayer designs. Even though they might have been influenced by the surrounding areas, they also insert reflections of their own local customs.
The colors of this Persian carpet are rich and warm, consisting of a range of browns, with an occasional blue accent. The motifs are nicely spaced to show off the luscious color of the background. When you look at the background, you can see natural color variations that give it depth and texture.
This is a magnificent antique rug that could easily go well in a traditional room, where it will add warmth and character. You could also allow its tribal characteristics to shine in a Boho chic design, where it would be perfectly at home in a room that features layered textures. This carpet has many possibilities for room design and is an excellent example of the hand-crafted artistic appeal of a Malayer carpet.
