Made by Thompson Engineering Company during World War 2. This type of shallow water helmet or TECO mask was used in place of traditional shallow water copper & brass helmets. A mask like this was obviously much lighter than a helmet and allowed for more mobility. This example is complete and in excellent condition. Few of these masks survived due to the rubber construction. Masks like this were the primary device used after the attack at Pearl Harbor, rather than heavy helmets.
This mask was found along with a Mark V diving helmet in a US Navy supply box. The box was taken off the USS ABSD-4 which was an auxiliary floating dry dock used in the Pacific during World War 2. The dock was used decades after WWII. The dry dock was abandoned in Seealer Harbor where it sank with section still visible above water today. The mask will come with a document attesting to its known history.
