Very interesting piece of English diving history. This helmet appears to be a Siebe Heinke 6 bolt model helmet. For a very short period of time in the 1960s the two companies combined, labeling products Siebe Heinke. We believe this helmet is likely one of these few helmets produced with no ID plate present on the breastplate. It is also possible a Siebe Gorman breastplate was mated with a Heinke bonnet to make a complete helmet decades ago. This helmet was found in the New Orleans, LA area where it had been in a families possession for many decades.
The helmet features the classic Heinke bonnet design. The spitock is present on the divers left side, exhaust wheel on the back right, communication hook-up on the upper back bonnet and lastly the air line elbow. The air inlet is stamped Heinke London. Attached to the inlet are two fittings. One fitting is stamped Heinke 196, the other is stamped Heinke Siebe. Glass is present in all three locations and in good condition. The top of the bonnet does exhibit typical small working dents associated with light use. Inside the bonnet are the air vents and a communication speaker. We did note the spitcock is pushed in slightly. Safety latch is present and moves freely.
The breastplate is in excellent condition with no visual flaws. All six wing nuts are intact and in great condition. Both brails are also in excellent condition. The inside of the neck ring has the serial number 12919 stamped into it. Both of the brails also have the same matching number. This number is consistent with Siebe Gorman serial numbers. There is no evidence of a Siebe Gorman brass ID plate ever being attached to the breastplate though. While this serial number would tend to point towards the breastplate being a pre-1960s Siebe Gorman part, the total lack of evidence of a ID plate is puzzling.
Regardless of this helmets history, it does have a wonderful consistent patina and a classic hard to find appearance!
All helmets sold & auctioned by Nation’s Attic Inc. will come with a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long term assurance of the helmets authenticity is un-matched in the industry and very important to us.
