This is likely your one and only opportunity to own a VERY SPECIAL bound set of every Skin Diver magazine ever printed! The first issue of Skin Diver magazine (SDM) was published and mailed out in December of 1951. Starting in 1952 the publisher offered subscribers the option to send their 1951 and 1952 issues back in to be bound. The few people that did this received their issue back in handsome green hardbound binding with gold external lettering!
While the binding is extremely attractive, it is likely few subscribers sent their copies to the publisher each year and had this expensive work done, especially since 1952! SDM continued to offer this service until 1966. Quite possibly costs and probably lack of demand are what ended this option for subscribers.
The set we are offering covers every issue from #1 December 1951 to December 1966! This set originally belonged to the diver Jack Waite, who is featured prominently in issue #1 and in others during 1952. In addition, Mr. Waite’s mailing label can be found on several issues! With his early involvement in diving and being featured in early issues, he had a strong interest in preserving each and every issue in the finest method possible.
As can be seen in the photos, the complete set is in wonderful shape. The green leather with gold lettering has been well taken care of over the decades and kept out of direct sunlight. Some volumes will have minor handling wear on the spine and corners. Please keep in mind that these bound issues were first individually mailed out, then sent back to the publisher where they were bound. Some of the issues will have mailing labels, creases in the paper, minor imperfections, slight staining, etc. Please refer to the photo showing the exposed side of the volumes. It is also safe to say these issues were preserved better than any loose collection could possibly be.
Not only is the a unique opportunity to own Jack Waite’s personal publishers bound collection of Skin Diver Magazine, but it is also possibly the only complete set known to exist. Regardless, this investment level accumulation of diving history is worthy of any personal or public library.
