During World War 2 the standard US Navy shallow water diving helmet was the Divinhood Style 3. These helmets have a classic appearance and were popular to use even after the war. The Divinhood Style 3 would be the last model Miller Dunn would make, going out of business after WWII. This model is also the pinnacle of shallow water helmet design. Its large front window and oval top window were easy to look out of and work with. The helmet fit nicely and was made so the head could easily tilt back inside the helmet - nice for working on ship bottoms!
This helmet does feature a few unique aspects that set it apart from most other Style 3 Divinhood helmets. First, this helmet features a communications fitting and communications cup installed by Craftsweld. Each component is properly stamped Craftsweld. This helmet is one of only a few we have ever seen with a professionally installed communications cup and fitting. Was this extra features installed by the US Navy or after the war? Regardless, this feature does add a functional and visual aspect to the helmet that makes it stand out from others.
Second, this helmet is an early example with countersunk flat head screws used on the window frames. Not long after production started the time consuming flat head screws were replaced by round head screws which did not require as much preparation of the window frame. Third, this helmet features a US Government serial number on the right side of the window frame, 729. Likely this helmet was sent to the US Navy during WWII. Style 3 Divinhood helmets not sold to the US Government did not feature a serial numbe. Last but not least, the helmet retains its original paint covering the copper body. A large majority of this paint is still intact with only small hints of paint loss in spots.
The helmet does retain both original lead weights. The brass bolts holding the lead on are first display purposes only and not the original type. The glass on the helmet is all present and in good condition. There are no major dents, just minor flaws from light use.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
