One of the most unique and sought after pieces of diving equipment is the larger and impressive air pumps. These pumps are commanding in presence and true pieces of mechanical, industrial, and diving history. These pumps also make for the ultimate diving helmet display stand!
This pump is a classic and desirable Model 3 made by the A.J. Morse & Son Company around 1900. This pump was designed for a single diver for use in rivers, lakes, and harbors, according to the AJ Morse catalogs. The ash cabinet encloses the two cylinder pump with serial number 1042 stamped on it. While difficult to see in the photos, the pump is in good original unrestored condition and still moves freely.
A key feature when considering an antique air pump like this is the cast iron wheels. This particular pump retains its original wheels and rotating metal and wood handles. A majority of the cabinet hardware is present as shown in the photos. The lower front wood door with the air plate is an old replacement. The outside of the cabinet appears to have been refinished long ago. There is a period correct Andrew J. Morse & Son pressure gauge intact but in need of restoration. The ash lid does have an old crack going across its width. The antique Champion 6 Lever brass lock on the lid hasp is functional and has two keys.
The model 3 pump popularity comes from its size. It has a relatively small cabinet measuring 40.5 inches tall, 17.5 inches wide, 18 inches deep. With the cast iron wheels, the total height is 50 inches. With the pump wheel handles easily removable, this pump can fit into many places. Its weight is also much less than the more commonly found two diver pumps. This example could easily be kept as it is or given a modern restoration. Either way, it is a great piece of diving history that rarely comes up on the market.
