This is a rare opportunity to purchase an early US Divers double hose regulator with some historic and very interesting history. The regulator is a circa 1951 to 1952 model with serial number 5873. The Broxton Ave address is present along with black uni-hose assembly and tinnerman clamps.
Rene Bussoz owner of Rene Sports in Los Angeles, California formed a new company calling it U.S. Divers Company in the year 1950. He struck a deal with Spirotechnique France and L’Aire Liquide Canada makers of the CG45 Aqua-Lung. He achieved his goal to gain sole distribution rights for the USA market. The first regulators shipped fully assembled from Canada with a custom label for U.S. Divers Co. “the Aqua-Lung (trade mark) BLACK LABEL 1045 Broxton Ave. L.A. Cal. ”. By 1951 Canada was manufacturing some of the regulator parts there rather than getting them from Spirotechnique France. 1951 Rene Bussoz worked a deal to have the regulators shipped partially unassembled. The reason was to save money on the import tariff assigned to each working regulator. Parts on the other hand came out of Canada with a much lower tariff. In late 1951 Rene Bussoz insisted on a new regulator label design, painted RED and to include “made in U.S.A. “ even though that was not completely true. At his Broxton Ave location he would have regulators fully assembled, tested and packaged for wholesale to dealers and retail the regulators in his own store now called U.S. Divers Co.
The southern California Fish and Game, Los Angeles was one of Rene’s customers to acquire this newer designed regulator from his U.S. Divers store. This is where the provenance comes into play for this auctioned RED LABEL trade mark regulator with “made in U.S.A.” You have to ask yourself “how many regulators do you find come up for auction that can be traced back to it’s original owner and location where purchased”. Not to mention the rarity of finding a RED LABEL trade mark Aqua-Lung. If you are a serious collector of Aqua-Lung regulators, you will want this one that will definitely elevate the value and prestige of your collection.
