Arguably the most desirable and collected diving helmet in the world, the United States Navy Mark V. This example was made in February of 1945 by the Morse Diving Equipment Company Inc. Morse was one of the original two companies to manufacture the Mark V for the US Navy starting in 1916. For unknown reasons, Morse made relatively few Mark V helmets during World War 2 compared to Schrader and DESCO.
An important detail on Mark V helmets is the serial numbers. In 1945 Morse placed the serial number on the two neck rings and four brails. This helmet features the number 5966 on all six locations plus the ID plate! It should be noted that this ID plate is a replacement, likely applied by Morse when they were located in Rockland, MA.
The helmet has all four serial numbered and matching brails, 12 wing nuts, window guards, glass, air & communications fittings, spitcock, BTE exhaust valve, and dumbbell safety latch with chain and cotter pin, neck ring gasket. Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present, as well as the exhaust button. There is an unusual communications set-up in the bonnet shown in the photos which adds a unique aspect to the helmet. The bonnet does have one very small hole at the very top. There are 3 holes in the internal air vent which do not protrude to the copper body. The glass is loose on the two side windows. The two side window guards are a slightly different configuration allowing the diver more horizontal vision, likely put on by a commercial diver.
This helmet has an excellent overall consistent patina and is serial numbers matching. While the ID plate is a replacement, it does allow the helmet to be easily dated and present in complete condition. Out of the four manufacturers of the Mark V during World War 2, it is our estimate that Morse helmets are the second most difficult to find. That combined with the great visual appearance of this example makes it a solid addition to any collection or display.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
