This divers air pump was made by arguably the most famous American diving equipment maker, the A.J. Morse & Son Company. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, this company would start making diving helmets and related equipment in the 1830s. Morse would design some of the most iconic helmets ever conceived. In addition to helmets, the company would make all other related diving equipment as well as firefighting gear. The company is still in business today in Milwaukee, WI.
This incredible air pump was likely made during the 1910s by Morse. The pump is a model number 3 that was restored and used by a professional diver as recently as 10 years ago in Lake Michigan. The pumps original wood case is long gone, but the pump mechanism and hardware are all intact and in functional condition! The pumps serial number is 1739.
As can be seen in the photos, the pump was painted in a beautiful dark green paint with red pinstriping tape. The brass components were all cleaned and reassembled with proper lubrication and seals to ensure safe air pressure while in use. An original Andrew J. Morse air gauge is intact. Both cast iron wheels with correct handles are also present and functioning with ease. A wood base was constructed to base to aid in moving the pump and protecting the cast iron frame. The wood base is simply bolted to the frame and can easily be removed if so desired. The pump measures 52 inches tall, 53 inches wide (23 inches wide without the handles).
The pump remains in very good condition with only minor signs of use. There are no visible cracks or breaks in the brass hardware or cast iron frame. The pump has set for the last decade unused so we can not guarantee perfect function. The handles and cylinders to move with ease and air pressure can be felt. Regardless, this air pump is being sold as a display piece only and not for use as an air source for diving.
Due to the size and weight of this item it will need to be secured to a pallet and shipped via freight. The pump can also be picked up at Nations Attic facility in Wichita, KS.
