Formerly of Connecticut, he moved to Belfast, Maine in the mid 1990s. He depicts the New England landscape, especially nondescript places such as shopping centers and forlorn industrial landscapes, which he explores with light, value, and color. His paintings reflect everyday places of a mobile society, places where people live and work. He is a full-time painter who works from a 750 square foot studio on the third floor of an old Victorian brick building. He studied at Ontario College of Art and the Academy of Fine Art in Florence, Italy. Linden Frederick is an American artist born in Amsterdam, New York in 1953. He is known for his haunting, cinematic paintings of American landscapes and urban environments. Frederick grew up in a rural area of upstate New York, and his childhood experiences of wandering through forests and fields would later influence his art. After completing his undergraduate studies at Ontario College of Art in Toronto, he returned to the United States and earned his MFA from Boston University. Frederick's paintings often depict nighttime scenes of small towns and isolated buildings, often bathed in the eerie glow of streetlights or car headlights. The sense of solitude and quietness in his works is heightened by the absence of human figures, suggesting a sense of longing or nostalgia. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States, and are included in the permanent collections of several major museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In addition to his painting career, Frederick is also a teacher and has taught at several institutions including Bowdoin College in Maine and the Maine College of Art.
