- Lot Description
Gerge Barrel Italo Botti (American, 1923-2003) Painting. Title - Friends at the Shore. Oil on canvas painting. Signed Barrel lower right. The artist uses both names, Italo Botti and George Barrel for his work. Measures 36 inches high, 36 inches wide. Frame measures 41.4 inches high, 41.4 inches wide. In good condition with a patched 6 inch split and a patched small puncture.
George Barrell, also known as Italo Botti (1923-2003), was an American artist known for his abstract expressionist paintings. He was born in Bari, Italy, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a child. Barrell studied at the Art Students League in New York City and later at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art. He was heavily influenced by the work of abstract expressionists such as Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell, and his own work often featured bold brushstrokes, dynamic compositions, and a rich use of color. Throughout his career, Barrell exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, as well as in galleries in Europe and South America. In addition to his work as a painter, Barrel also taught at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York City. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Tate Modern in London.Condition
