La primera edición de este escrito se publicó en 1754, es un tratado de construcción de embarcaciones y de navegación, con teoría, práctica y aplicaciones de todos los instrumentos necesarios para estos fines. Explica la naturaleza de la proporción, los principios de geometría y el uso de logaritmos en la construcción de navíos; los métodos y técnicas de dibujo aplicados al diseño de embarcaciones y todos los conocimientos necesarios sobre exploración y reconocimiento geográfico.
