"Mejicanos: Ya estais en el caso de saludar a la Patria independiente como os anuncie en Iguala: ya recorrí el inmenso espacio que hay desde la esclavitud a la libertad, y toque los diversos resortes para que todo americano enseñase su opinión escondida… ya me veis en la capital del imperio más opulento, sin dejar atrás ni arroyos de sangre, ni campos talados, ni viudas desconsoladas, mi desgraciados hijos, que llenen de execraciones al asesino de su padre… ya sabeis el modo de ser libres, a vosotros toca el de ser felices… y si mis trabajos (tan debidos a la Patria) los suponéis dignos de recompensa, concederme solo vuestra sumisión a las leyes, dejad que vuelva al seno de mi tierna y amada familia, y de tiempo en tiempo haced una memoria de vuestro amigo.
