Circa 1857. The knife is in as close to mint condition as possible. The blade with clip and nice swedge, fingernail file decoration on top both sides. Stamped on the front blade flat and haft on back "J.D. Chevalier New York 360 Broadway". Blade tip slightly reshaped; 98% original polish. German silver mounts on knife. Mother of Pearl scales, two to each side; four decorative rivets in each scale. Scabbard is black leather with coin silver mounts. Rear of throat mount inscribed "Wm. G. W. from his Friend G.C. November 23rd, 1857". Sheath in almost new condition; one small piece of black leather veneer missing. From Robert Abels' collection; his red fingernail polish inventory number on blade; pictured in his book "Bowie Knives", printed in 1962, page 39. Also from the Bill Williamson collection, pictured in the catalog from the dispersal of his estate, lot No. 3500. Overall: 12 - 1/4" L.
