Circa 1850. Elegant long clip point, swedge on both sides of front half of blade. Left side bottom of blade beautifully etched with the motto "Rough and Ready Battle of Buena Vista", framed by leaf designs. The top side of the blade has several ciphers "E. Barnes & Sons 226 Solly Street Sheffield", "Warrick Works Sheffield" and" The Real Life Defender - the Hunters Companion", also stamped on the haft, which can only be partially read "Warranted of the Best Quality". Strange condition; the haft on both sides and a little forward of the haft is heavily pitted. The rest of the blade is in fine condition, a few minor black spots and scratching, 90% original polish remains, and all etchings sharp and clear. Has German silver mounts, handle and scabbard. Mother of Pearl scales with four decorative rivets on each side, large shield nameplate on left side; coffin hilted pommel adorned with full alligator. Lovely scabbard with black leather; embossed and gilded with floral design on the edges, 60% of which still present. In center of scabbard is an embossed and gilded American eagle with spread wings surrounded by stars. Has two embossed and gilded scrolls, one on each side, "Liberty" and "Independence". On right side of scabbard 95% gilding intact, on left side 60% intact. Some small piece of outer leather peeled on edges. Blade length 9-1/2" L. Overall: 14" L.
