Very long and heavy knife, with overall length of 15-1/2", and blade length of 11". Circa 1845. Nice long clip with swedge on both sides. Very thick heavy blade, good for fighting. Stamped by maker on haft "E. Barns & Sons 266 Solly Street Sheffield". Fine to heavy pitting, especially front half of blade, on both sides. Shows numerous chips on edge and later sharpening marks. German silver mounts. Cow horn scales with worm damage to both sides. Coffin pommel, full alligator, some nicks and dents, but does not mar the beauty of the pommel. Original leather scabbard, nicely embossed in gold on the front. Legend "California Gold Finder". Embossed and gilded edges, of which there is 20% gilding remaining. Rear of scabbard, 50% of outer leather cover is missing. German silver mounts on scabbard, frog on throat missing. Overall: 15-1/2" L.
