Parts 1 and 2 of the 1851 publication "London Labor and The London Poor" by Henry Mayhew, published by Harper & Brothers. These rare and historically significant volumes offer a detailed and empathetic portrayal of the working-class life in Victorian London. The editions are illustrated with daguerreotypes by Richard Beard, providing a unique and authentic visual documentation of the subjects discussed within.
Part 1: Features an illustration titled "Old Sarcy, the well-known Hurdy-gurdy Player," along with several other captivating images that bring the struggles and daily lives of London's poor into vivid focus.
Part 2: Continues to explore the various trades and livelihoods of London's laboring classes, with illustrations such as "The Coster-Girl," "The London Costermonger," "The Oyster Stall," and "Duke's Place," all derived from daguerreotypes, giving a rare and authentic glimpse into the period's street life.
The original paper covers of both parts are intact, although showing signs of wear consistent with age, such as minor tears, creases, and edge wear. The interior pages, while exhibiting some light foxing and toning, remain largely clean, with the illustrations well-preserved and striking in their detail.
These volumes are not only important literary works but also significant historical documents, capturing the realities of 19th-century London life through both text and early photographic techniques. This set would be an invaluable addition to any collection focused on social history, photography, or Victorian literature.
Each volume is 10" x 7"
