An exceedingly rare and historically significant 1 1/2" diameter gold-filled locket contains a tintype of Texas Confederate Captain Joseph (Jose) Maria Jesus Andres Rafael de la Garza. A cherished piece of Civil War memorabilia, this locket holds a tangible connection to a prominent figure in Texas military history.
Captain Joseph de la Garza was commissioned on March 31, 1862, as a Second Lieutenant in a unit that would become Company "K" of the 6th Texas Infantry. His military career is a testament to his leadership and bravery. After his regiment was captured at Arkansas Post, Lieutenant Garza, along with remnants of seven Texas units, were reorganized into the 17th Consolidated Texas Cavalry. His service continued as he later transferred to the 33rd Texas Cavalry (Benavides Regiment) and eventually earned the rank of Captain in the 3rd Texas Infantry.
Captain Garza's valor led him to the Battle of Mansfield during the Red River Campaign, a crucial engagement on April 8, 1864, where he was mortally wounded while defending against Union General Banks' unsuccessful attempt to invade Texas. Following the battle, Captain Garza's family brought his remains back to San Antonio, where he was laid to rest in the San Fernando Cemetery, ensuring his legacy would be remembered.
The locket itself is a fine example of 19th-century craftsmanship, with intricate detailing that complements the somber, yet dignified image of Captain Garza preserved inside. The tintype captures the essence of a man dedicated to his cause, making this a unique and invaluable piece for collectors of Civil War relics and Texas history.
