- Lot Description
Original seascape oil painting on board by listed Oregon artist, Mary (Mamie) Parvin Brown (1867-1932), signed lower left. Art measures 9" h x 14" w presented in a frame measuring 11.5" x 17".
Provenance: Mary Parvin Brown attended Willamette University, studying under Marie Craig. She later worked at Northwest Normal Collection, also known as the Capitol Normal School, founded by her father in Salem in 1897. She served as the school principal and also taught china painting, fine art and music. Brown moved to Portland around the turn of the century and opened the Northwest Normal School of Music and Art. She exhibited with the Oregon Society of Artists and in Oregon State Fairs. Brown had a studio in Portland on NW Thurman Street. She was also known as Mrs. James Brown. Education: Willamette University: M. Craig; M. Bridges; C. Cooke (1882-88). Membership: Oregon Society of Artists. Awards: Oregon State Fair (1891, 1894, 1900, 1902). Collections: Oregon Historical Society. Exhibitions: Oregon State Fair (1891, 1894, 1900, 1902); Oregon Society of Artists (1930); Pittock Mansion (China Painters of the Golden Age, 1890-1920, 2000); Heppner; Hillsboro. We offer in house shipping for the majority of the items that are sold in the auction. The exceptions being furniture, bulk or heavy items like marble statues or extremely fragile items. For these items, we recommend you work with a shipper. Shipping charges are not included in the winning hammer price. If you live over 4 hours from the auction house, we will assume that you would like your items shipped. Please let us know if you do not want them shipped if you are over 4 hours away from the auction house. The card that you registered with will be charged for all shipping charges and you will also receive an email with tracking information.
