Original oil painting on canvas by listed artist, Marion Baker, signed lower right & noted on the verso. Features the historic Celilo Falls tribal dip net fishing platforms on the Columbia River, east of the Cascades on the border of Oregon & Washington state. Art measures 16" h x 24" w mounted in a frame measuring 19" x 27".
The name 'Celilo' means "sound of water upon the rocks" or "echo of water falling" & refers to a series of cascades and waterfalls on the river, as well as to the native settlements and trading villages that existed there in various configurations for 15,000 years. Celilo was the oldest continuously inhabited community on the North American continent until 1957. Historically, an estimated fifteen to twenty million salmon passed through the falls every year, making it among the greatest fishing sites in North America.
A personal note on the verso describes the personal provenance of this painting & various articles are attached featuring the history of Cello falls.
