Original nautical seascape oil painting on canvas by listed artist, Gideon Jacques Denny (CA, DE, 1830 - 1886), signed lower left. Features Point San Pedro on the California coast. Art measures 20" h x 36" w presented in a frame measuring 28" x 44".
As a young man Denny was a sailor of small craft on Chesapeake Bay and his enthusiasm for ships never waned. He was a pupil of Samuel Marsden Brookes. Although he did a few portraits and landscapes, it was his paintings of the clippers and shipping activities on San Francisco Bay that were to bring him success and fame.
Upon his death a memorial exhibition of his works was held at the Society of California Pioneers. Member: Bohemian Club; Pacific Union Club; Society of Calif. Pioneers; San Francisco Art Association. For these items, we recommend you work with a shipper. Shipping charges are not included in the winning hammer price. If you live over 4 hours from the auction house, we will assume that you would like your items shipped. Please let us know if you do not want them shipped if you are over 4 hours away from the auction house. The card that you registered with will be charged for all shipping charges and you will also receive an email with tracking information.
