Maurice Sendak (American, 1928-2012) "Freedom to Read" Deluxe Signed Print. American Booksellers Association [1991]. Issued to promote awareness to censorship in books and to aid the ABA's legal defense fund in fighting censorship. This is the Deluxe version, limited to 90 copies with a smaller Sendak image but autographed by forty otherwise censored writers, celebrities and actors (see list below). The imagery includes Mickey from In The Night Kitchen, Huckleberry Finn, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, and Catcher in the Rye all of which were banned or censored when first published. This is a finely produced art print of the Deluxe version which is signed by Maurice Sendak, and also hand-signed by forty additional authors or artists, all of whom have experienced professional censorship in their careers: including Jeffrey Archer, Harlan Ellison, Harrison Ford, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Blum, Beth Henley, Barry Moser, Dan Rather, Neil Simon, Gloria Steinem, Garry Trudeau, Chris Van Allsburg, David Weisner and Robin Williams. A Regular Limited edition of 275 copies was also produced, numbered and only signed by the artist (also printed 27 "hors commerce" for use by the participants). Size: 11'' x 8.5'', 28 x 22 cm (image); 30.25'' x 21.5'', 77 x 55 cm (sheet).
