- Lot Description
Fine Cuzco School Painting, 20th c. "Archangel Gabriel", oil painting on canvas. Size: 54.25'' x 36'', 138 x 91 cm (stretcher); 61.75'' x 43.5'', 157 x 110 cm (frame). This portrayal of the Archangel Gabriel is an example of the tradition of the Cuzco School of Painting, which dates to 18th Century Vice Regal Peru. Archangel Gabriel's name means "God is my Strength", and he is one of only two archangels named in both the Old and New Testament. Here, Gabriel is an excellent combination of colors in light brownish-grey hues, blue, red and silver. He carries in his left hand a powder horn, for he acted as "the messenger of God.” With his right hand, he is about to pick up the barrel of an arquebus. Similar to the previous lot, this painting was also done in 1988 by the Workshop of CASA MAS, Lima's finest Art Gallery, and was commissioned to be a companion piece to the portrait of Archangel Raphael (Lot 465).
