Felipe Linares (Mexico, b. 1936) Day of the Dead Capitalist Walking His Dog, mixed media and papier mache sculpture, signed. Size: 60.5'' x 27'' x 47'' (154 x 69 x 119 cm). This animated skeleton is a rare museum quality example of the work of Felipe Linares. The Linares family in Mexico City is internationally known for their "cartoneria," or paper mache works of art. Felipe, born in 1936, the son of the international pioneer Pedro Linares, has built a reputation for animated skeletons. He was commissioned to make skeletal Olympic athletes for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. For the Day of the Dead celebrations in 1986, Felipe was also commissioned to commemorate the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. His work can be found in museums around the world including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the British Museum, the Fowler Museum of Cultural History in Los Angeles, and the Royal Museum of Modern Art in Glasgow. This life-size skeleton has it all: A top hat, coat tails, a smoking cigar, his walking cane, and of course his trusty best friend. The dog is not attached to the base and the cigar, head, and cane disassemble for convenient transport.
