Robert Mangold (b. 1937, North Tonawanda, NY) studied at the Cleveland Art Institute before earning his BFA (1961) and MFA (1963) at Yale, where he explored various styles alongside classmates like Brice Marden and Richard Serra. After moving to New York, he worked as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art with Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, and Dan Flavin, contributing to the rise of Minimalism. By 1964, Mangold had established his signature Minimalist style and debuted his first solo exhibition, Walls and Areas, at Fischbach Gallery. He participated in key exhibitions, including Systematic Painting (Guggenheim, 1966) and Primary Structures (Jewish Museum, 1967). He later taught at institutions such as the School of Visual Arts and Yale. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1969, Mangold relocated to upstate New York, where he continues to live and work. His work has been featured in major museums worldwide, including the Guggenheim, Stedelijk Museum, Musée d’Orsay, and the Whitney Biennial (four times). His paintings are held in approximately 100 international public collections.
