Louise Fishman’s work celebrates process, with monumental, energetic surfaces of layered color and texture. Her paintings reflect a deep exploration of materials and mark-making, using scrapers, trowels, and brushes to build, remove, and reapply paint over time. Beyond technical mastery, her abstractions are emotionally evocative, continually recharged by viewers’ responses. Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Fishman was active in the feminist movement of the late 1960s and early ’70s, briefly shifting from painting to sculptural and material explorations of feminine art. She returned to painting with her 1973 Angry Women series, honoring key feminist figures. Embracing gestural abstraction, she challenged the male-dominated art world, reviving Abstract Expressionism for a new era and gender. At a time when postmodernism dismissed painting as “dead,” Fishman’s work proved otherwise.
