In my painting titled “Hands,” I invite viewers into a moment fraught with tension and layered narratives. As an artist, my goal was to introduce multiple stories within a single canvas, each distinct yet united by the common theme of hands.
Set against the backdrop of a fog-laden, muddy street in a late 19th-century Old West town, four men on horseback find themselves in a standoff, their expressions a complex blend of resolve, uncertainty, and palpable tension as they demand the opposing side to show their “hands” and lay down their weapons.
In the center window, men are engaged in “hands” of cards, blissfully unaware of the volatile situation unfolding just outside their view. To the right, a man nervously seeks a woman’s “hand” in marriage, symbolizing love amidst the chaos.
Behind this scene, a woman tenderly grasps the “hand” of a young child, leading them unknowingly toward what may become a perilous confrontation.
It is my hope that viewers will ponder how each separate narrative might conclude, allowing them to finish the story in their own unique way. - Joe Kronenberg
