Andy Thomas (b. 1957) Dragoons in Apache Country 24" x 36" oil on linen Signed lower right $30,000-50,000
In the Spring of 1854, Lt. John Davidson led sixty Dragoons of the U.S. Army into Jicarilla Apache territory. He recklessly ordered an assault on a village and the Jicarilla responded fiercely. Eventually, the Dragoons were pinned down, taking a heavy barrage of arrows, and were in danger of running out of ammunition.
In order to save his command, Davidson ordered his men to mount and a hasty retreat ensued. Twenty-two troopers were killed. Nearly every surviving soldier was wounded.
Black lights clean. Excellent condition.
