Riding Point is a fine example of a large-scale pastel work by Tom Ryan, the likes of which are rarely seen at auction. What makes this piece more special is that it is being offered alongside the artist’s original preliminary sketch. Studying the sketch for “Riding Point” allows the viewer to learn about Ryan’s process: detailed notes and colors swatches of each element surround the figure of the cowboy on horseback. Comparing the two works shows that Ryan made changes to the final piece, such as the inclusion of a secondary rider in the distance. This behind-the-scenes look into Ryan’s process shows us how his attention to detail results in an evocative glimpse into the American West.
Arguably the biggest influence on Tom Ryan’s body of work was his time spent on the famed Four Sixes ranch in Texas. Starting with Ryan’s first visit in 1963, this was a turning point that fueled Ryan’s decision to focus on the contemporary, rather than historical, West. According to American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member and Texas ranching authority Jim Jennings, the rider Ryan featured in Riding Point is Four Sixes cowboy Tommy Sursa.Condition
Both artworks appear to be in good condition. There is no evidence of restoration.
